It's Time

“The person who moves a mountain begins by carrying away small stones.” ~Confucius
This mural is a celebration of local organizers, advocates, and changemakers who are developing groundbreaking and innovative models of social engagement. It is through the work and leadership of these organizations that the Bay Area is emerging as a center of creative explosion. Many of the individuals featured in this mural are affecting the national conversation around issues such as of worker’s rights, immigrant rights, environmental policy, green jobs, education, racial justice, food justice, and equitable access to resources.
My intent as an artist was to profile these groups and inject them into a public conversation through the mural. Art has the ability to incite dialogue, promote ideals, and elicit action. Each panel makes a statement about our collective goals for a community of the 21st century, one that repects people and the planet.
The title, “IT’S TIME,” is meant to reinforce the power of the present. Through daily acts of awareness, mindfulness, and action, we can organize for change not just for the future, but for today. What are you doing today for a better planet and healthier community?
The piece was commissioned by the Mitchell Kapor Foundation and features the following organizations which are grant recipients of the foundation: Asian Communities for Reproductive Justice, Citizen Engagement Labs, CollegeBoundBros.org, Ella Baker Center for Human Rights, Green for All, La Cocina, Level Playing Field Institute, and Oakland Rising. A special thank you to the creative team that assisted me: Bobby Nicholson, Ira Hawkins, Deborah Tragsiel, Cesar Maxit, & Art Kotoulas.
